that particular scene shows how Thomas is more of a troubled soul than an evil character. he tries to do all that he can to show he is human and can be relatable too, even if it’s through manipulation. and it is all during a time when homosexuality was not in the slightest bit tolerated, which is not to justify the way he went on about his feelings for Jimmy later on, but to indicate how a backward society with a set of mandated rules can be largely responsible for the way human beings behave when they are unjustly stripped of their right to freedom.
